Swedish Apple Cake with Caramel

Ingredients:
– 3 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1 tablespoon sugar
– 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
– 3/4 cup granulated sugar
– 2 large eggs
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1/2 cup whole milk
For the caramel sauce:
– 1/2 cup granulated sugar
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
– 1/4 cup heavy cream
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
2. Toss the apple slices with cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Set aside.
3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
4. In a large bowl, cream the butter and 3/4 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then add vanilla extract.
5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with milk, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern on top. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
7. While the cake bakes, make the caramel sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until golden brown. Add butter and stir until melted. Slowly whisk in the cream until smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
8. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the cake before serving.
